Steel Trough Planter Finishes

Planters can be finished in three ways:

  • Galvanised finish: Steel is hot-dipped galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 standards. No maintenance is required.
  • Painted Weather Effect: Spray-painted with a zinc phosphate primer and topcoat. We use a 100-micron minimum coating.
  • Bare Metal: Left to Rust for a unique and stunning patina.

Rectangular Metal Trough Planters FAQs

Galvanised steel troughs make excellent planters. Due to the finish on the steel, these troughs require very little maintenance and will last for decades.

You could consider improving the drainage of your metal planter by adding gravel or pebbles to the base, on top of the liner.

Metal planters can be very good for plants. They are highly durable and can withstand all kinds of weather conditions.

Metal raised beds can be very good for deterring slugs and other pests, as the smoother surface makes it harder for them to reach the plants.

It is recommended that you line your metal planter before putting soil or other drainage in. Metal planters may heat up in direct sunlight, and liners can help to mitigate that heat, as well as keep the soil in.

It is recommended that all metal planters have drainage holes. This is because water cannot escape through the metal, which can lead to root rot and other issues.

All of our trough planters come with a drainage hole as standard.

Metal planters can last for decades, often up to 30 years when looked after.
