Steel Raised Beds Types

Our range of steel raised beds offers a variety of options to suit your gardening needs. Each type of bed is designed with durability, aesthetics, and functionality in mind. Here, we introduce two of our popular types: CorTen Steel Raised Beds and Mild Steel Raised Beds.

CorTen Steel Raised Beds

CorTen Steel Raised Beds are a fantastic choice for those seeking a blend of strength and style. Known for its weathered, rustic appearance, CorTen steel develops a protective layer of rust when exposed to the elements. This not only gives it a unique and attractive look but also enhances its resistance to corrosion. These beds are perfect for creating a natural, organic feel in your garden while providing a robust environment for your plants to thrive.

Mild Steel Raised Beds

Mild Steel Raised Beds are another excellent option, offering durability and versatility. Mild steel is known for its incredible strength and resilience, making it a reliable choice for your garden. It weathers to the same patina as our CorTen steel raised beds and will remain a long-lasting part of your garden. With their sleek, modern look, mild steel raised beds can add a contemporary touch to your outdoor space.

FAQs

Are metal raised beds better than wood?

Metal raised beds can be a better choice than wood due to their durability and resistance to rot and pests. They also require less maintenance and can offer a sleek, modern aesthetic.

What do you put on the bottom of a metal raised garden bed?

The bottom of a metal raised garden bed can be filled with a layer of cardboard or newspaper to suppress weeds. Follow this with a mix of topsoil, compost, and other organic matter to provide a rich growing medium for your plants.

How deep should a raised bed be?

The depth of a raised bed should ideally be at least 6 to 12 inches, but it can be deeper depending on the types of plants you’re growing. Some vegetables, for example, prefer a depth of 18 to 24 inches.

Do you need a membrane under raised beds?

A membrane is not always necessary under raised beds, but it can help to prevent weeds from growing up into the bed from below. It can also help to prevent the leaching of nutrients from the soil.

Are metal raised beds worth it?

If you are looking towards long-term investments for your property, metal raised beds are definitely worthwhile over their counterparts.

Metal raised beds are incredibly durable, lasting decades, and they don’t tend to suffer from traditional raised bed issues like waterlogged soil. They also act as an effective barrier against weeds.

What are three mistakes to avoid when gardening with raised beds?

Three typical mistakes seen in raised bed gardening include:

  1. Poor soil choice – Your raised bed is only as effective as the soil you put in it. If you opt for soil with poor nutrient content, you may struggle to see plant growth.
  2. Using the wrong-sized beds – You should install a bed that can provide enough space and depth for the plants you’re trying to grow. If you use the wrong-sized bed, you may find that your plants don’t have the room to spread out and grow effectively, which may result in them dying.
  3. Watering and Mulching – As any gardener knows, watering your plants is essential for growth. Despite the water-retaining qualities of some raised beds, though, you should ensure you follow guidance on watering.

You should also ensure that mulching becomes a part of your gardening routine. Mulching is incredibly helpful for keeping plants warm and helps to save water and suppress weed growth.

Are metal raised beds safe to grow vegetables?

Metal raised beds are absolutely safe for growing vegetables.

Unlike wooden and plastic raised beds, metal raised beds can be straightforward to clean, and the steel does not absorb moisture or bacteria, either, so it’s much harder for issues to arise within the soil that could affect crops.

Are metal raised beds too hot?

While some metal raised beds can retain heat, the common consensus is that it isn’t enough to raise the temperature of the soil.

Do metal raised beds leach chemicals?

No, our solid steel raised beds do not leach chemicals into the soil. Steel is a very safe metal to grow fruits and vegetables with.

If your steel is galvanised, it may contain traces of zinc, which may leach into the soil. Zinc is a naturally occurring mineral that is often found in soil, and plants absorb zinc for their own growth.

How deep should a raised bed be for growing vegetables?

Where vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, and courgettes are concerned, you should aim to provide at least 46 cm of soil depth.

Other vegetables like peppers, radishes, and carrots need much less. Aim towards a depth of roughly 31 cm.

We offer raised beds in a range of heights to meet your needs. If you require beds deep enough to grow some of the deeper-rooted plants, we would recommend opting for the 600 mm height option.
