Recently we undertook a big project with Jekka’s Herb Garden, a sustainably managed farm producing medical and culinary herbs in South Gloucestershire.
Jekka and her family originally built the Herbetum back in 2013, as a means to display the collection of more than 400 different herbs, but their experience dates back decades.
“The Herb Garden is one of the most creative uses we’ve seen so far of our self-installation steel edging,” says Edward Powell Director and Founder of Steel Landscaping Co. “The final product looks absolutely incredible.”
In this blog, we’ll be looking at the designs our products created, as well as the project as a whole, and what we were able to contribute.
Background
“Jekka’s is a family-run business, with principles and goals very similar to our own. When they contacted us, it really was an exciting opportunity to work with such a fantastic business,” says Grace Powell, Director of Operations at Steel Landscaping Co.
Jekka herself is an incredibly passionate gardener, a passion that has led to multiple award-winning exhibits at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and a thriving family herb farm.
The herb garden is also a means to help protect species and promote natural biodiversity, which is very much lacking in the UK.
Design
Taking inspiration from her 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show entry, Jekka’s Herb Garden is constructed around two large interconnected circular beds, utilising our self-installation steel edging products.
The idea behind this infinite loop, is to give visitors the impression of a never ending cycle, where visitors may notice something completely different on each walk through.
The design was created on a computer, to help map out the spread of each of the herbs so each plant is given the right space to thrive, so it was important that our steel edging was fabricated and structured precisely to ensure the design was bought to life accurately with a focus on maintaining a simple installation process.
“When looking at the design from above, you’ll notice that the edging is shaped into two large flowers with eight oval petals on each,” says Edward, “each of these petals are the individual herb gardens.”
“In order to ensure that our edging could be installed as per their design, we went through a very careful process to ensure we were able to create the intricate, curved edges,” explains Edward.
“The edging is very simple to install, and proved to be a wonderful addition to the project.”
Jekka’s & Steel Landscaping Co.
Family values and strong business ethics aren’t the only traits that Jekka’s and Steel Landscaping Co share in common.
“Jekka’s commitment to the environment and the responsibility they feel towards their products and customers, is something that we certainly share in common,” says Grace.
“One of the core roots at Jekka’s is to be environmentally conscious, we have followed these principles in the construction of the herb garden, by selecting our suppliers with similar roots.” Say Jekka’s.
“The steel edging has been made by Steel Landscaping Co, which like Jekka’s is a family run business. They use the best quality steel that lasts a lifetime and both manufacture and fabricate here in the UK.”
The Future
The tactile and personal touches that we were able to offer to the project has led to further opportunities to work together.
As Grace explains, “we’ll be helping Jekka’s on a new project supplying our latest product, the steel weave raised beds’
“We’re also proud to be a supporter of Jekka’s HerbFest,” explains Edward “this event celebrates the growing and use of herbs in cookery, medicine and overall well being, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”
“It’s an exciting time for us as a business, we’re growing and projects with like-minded business are fantastic to be a part of.”
